1  ART TO REMEMBER LESSON BIRCH TREE IN WINTER -WATER COLOR GRADE: 6 Supplies: -ATR paper -watercolors : cool colors -med.& small Brushes -bowls for water -Blue painters tape 1” or wider -ultra fine tip black sharpie Project: 1.Paper orientation should be horizontal. 2.Give each student a piece of tape to go on the bottom of the page. 3.Give each student 3-4 strips of tape long enough to go top to bottom. 4.Students will then CAREFULLY tear the tape down the middle. (do it slow and short tears) 5.Once they have the half they can lay it down on the paper. Repeat this till you have at least 5 trees. 6.Tear smaller pieces of tape for smaller branches 7.Explain to them that you don’t want them all straight up and down, some can be leaning and close to another tree. You don’t want it to look like evenly spaced stripes. 8.Take water colors and wet brush and paint. Paint around the tape. Use cool colors for a wintery scene like blues, teals, and purples. Adding black will give it more of a night time scene. 9.Use more water for softer colors or less water for more intense color. 10.Peel off tape to reveal white tree trunks. 11.Use a black ultra fine sharpie to draw in the tree trunk details. 12.Use a small brush and black watercolor to add a light shadow on the left side of the tree. 13.Add a shadow going slightly to the right of the page just underneath the tree. 14.Sign name with sharpie, making sure you stay an 1’ away from the edges.
