Snakes / Other Insects & Animals (1) J.T Dogs, Dolphins, Sea Lions were one of the very few animals used by the U.S, during the Vietnam War. These animals were used as either attack animals (dogs), used to carry supplies and used to detect mines/traps on land and in water. Sea lions were also used to detect suspicious swimmers and retrieve lost items. The U.S used animals during the Vietnam war to their advantage.

Snakes / Other Insects & Animals (2) J.T Although there are animals that have helped the U.S., in Vietnam, due to it’s thick jungles, has many varieties and species of animals that caused Veterans issues. One of the animals that caused Veterans trouble was the Many-banded krait, otherwise known as, the Two Step Snake. Regarding its name, old stories were told about how this snake, after it bit you, would kill you after you take two steps. This isn’t true, but they are highly venomous and caused fear for the Veterans in Vietnam. There were other reported encounters, such as monkeys, mosquitos, leeches (Which they burn them off) and even tigers.

Malaria Sarah Poon  Transmitted by mosquitoes.  Life threatening blood disease  Parasite travels to the liver where it stays to grow. Then travels to the bloodstream.  Symptoms include:  High fever, headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and confusion.

MOSQUITOS/MALARIA Sarah Poon Lost more casualties to malaria than bullets, entire divisions ceased to be effective combat units due to malaria. Cerebral Malaria victims and PTSD Soldiers were given a little plastic container of repellent. More like food for mosquitos instead. Anti-malarial pills, that didn’t work for everybody. Worthless than the repellent.

MONSOON CONDITIONS Sarah Poon Vietnam has high temperatures/ humidity, freezing temperatures in monsoon.  Troops were constantly wet, unable to get dry.  Skin hygiene was poor  Bacterial/fungal foot infection, major cause of temporary disability

ND)) Dehydration caused excessive sweating, throwing up, diarrhea, and excessive peeing It was the reason for many soldier’s deaths this lead to loss of troops and it also affected their physical conditions as well. Soldiers who were dehydrated could not move around well and function which meant they couldn’t perform as well as normally To prevent dehydration, soldiers carried substantial amounts of water on operations

CP Pills Anti - malaria pills A large, orange pill taken once a week CP (Chloroquine-Primaquine) The pill helped people in the war who caught malaria and malaria came from mosquitos. AF

Jungle Rot MM It’s a lesion occurring in cutaneous leishmaniasis. It is caused by a variety of microorganisms, including mycobacteria. It is common in tropical climates. It affects mainly the feet of the soldiers. It can be caused by excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis. The only way to prevent is to keep the feet clean, dry, and warm.

Fire Ants MM Fire ants is a common name for a species of ants in the genus solenopsis Solenopsis(fire ants) are stinging ants and often attack and kill small animals. Fire ants bite just for grip and sting from the abdomen and injects a toxic alkaloid venom called Solenopsin. A way to stop fire ant attacks is to find the mound and drench it with hot water.
