16
Following the Example of Mr. Taylor (12 min) Complete the rest of HO 4.4 for your upcoming unit, using standards just identified You may work in your groups or independently.
17
Debrief (5 min) What are some obstacles which you can foresee in implementing your unit? What resources do you have access to which can help you in addressing the math skills in for your up coming unit?
18
Transition You have just completed a process which will help you make informed decisions about math skills needed to teach the science concepts in your course(s) Next we will look at specific strategies for teaching math skills!
19
Session Agenda TimeActivity 5:00- 5:15 15 minutes OpeningStrategy Debrief 5:15- 6:10 55 minutes Section 1Mathematics in Science 6:10- 7:05 55 minutes Section 2Implementing Effective Strategies for Math skills in Science 35 minutesSection 3Analyzing Pretest Data 10 minutesClosingReflection
20
Implementing Effective Strategies for Math skills in Science Beginning the strategy routine Demonstration of 2 strategies – 1 for developing math skills and concepts that are procedural in nature – 1 for understanding graphs
21
Developing Math skills and Concepts that are Procedural in Nature “Just Following Orders” Used to help students with procedural or multi-step concepts in math and science. It helps students determine the order in which steps need to occur Write sentence strips for different steps in the procedure ( ex. a-d) – What type of learning styles will this help accommodate?
22
Demonstration of “Just Following Orders” Take out HO 4.6 (pg 223) Volunteer: read word problem Background – In this lesson S will have already been introduced to Boyles Law and have used it a few times. – This is not the first activity they have used to understand Boyles Law Turn and talk (1 min) – Put steps in the proper order
23
Report Out Which step goes first? Why? Which step goes second? Why? Which step goes third? Why? Which step goes fourth? Why?
24
Write this Activity Into Your Unit ( 6 min) Use HO 4.6 to plan a “Just Follow Orders” activity for their unit Write down each step of the procedure in the boxes “Steps in Procedure” Find a problem, then write them in an incorrect order “Steps in the Problem” Use - Bio or Physics example on HO 4.3 if your unit does not have a procedural component
25
Exchange and Solve ( 2 min) Swap HO 4.6 with the group closest to you to your left – On their HO, Write the correct order – Discuss rational for your decision Swap back and Share Feedback How will this activity benefit your students?
26
Next Strategy: Analyzing Charts and Graphs What skills do students need when it comes to graphs and charts? Goals: – Helping students interpret graphs – Helping students determine the best type of graph to use in representing data. These are essential for science literacy and inquiry
27
What Graphs Tell us (3 min) Work in groups of 2-3 at your table on HO 4.7 This is an introductory activity to help students determine the best purpose for each type of graph. Read the directions carefully and be sure to discuss how you would help your students understand this material.
28
Share Out How would you help your students understand the information that each type of graph shows?
29
Take out HO 4.8 a and b In groups of 5 (4 min) – Analyze the assigned category of graph on HO 4.1b – Complete HO 4.8a for that type of graph. – Be prepared to share your findings.
30
Share Findings (4 min) Each group reports findings ( 1 min each)
31
Debrief Activity (2min) How might you use this activity in your classroom? What additional support, structure, or information might your students need? How would you review or teach the math skills needed to interpret a graph in your classroom?
32
Planning a Lesson Using Graphs ( 5 min) Identify how you might build instruction on charts and graphs into your up coming unit Be prepared to briefly share the topic selected, the graph you will present and your plan to develop student understanding
33
Share out ( 2 min) Briefly share the topic you selected, the graph you will present and your plan to develop student understanding We will discuss this further in session 12 when we will talk about helping students present data.
34
Introduction to the Strategies We began the strategy routine by looking at 2 strategy lessons, now lets look at the strategy overview chart for this session Take out HO 4.9
35
Mathematics Strategy Overview ( 8 min) Silent read – Review each strategy Consider what you are already doing and how these strategies relate to that. These can be used to supplement or modify your current curriculum Instruction You will need to pick one of these strategies to implement before the next session Use of the strategy planning and implementation routine is one way to develop course competency for instruction
36
Expectation for Strategy Pick at least 1 strategy based on your students’ needs for you up coming lessons. Develop a plan to implement the strategy within the context of the next unit, using HO 4.11 Use the criteria listed on HO 4.10 to ensure the full implementation of the strategies. Implement the strategy Complete the reflection HO 4.12 All done before next session!
37
Session Agenda TimeActivity 5:00- 5:15 15 minutes OpeningStrategy Debrief 5:15- 6:10 55 minutes Section 1Mathematics in Science 6:10- 7:05 55 minutes Section 2Implementing Effective Strategies for Math skills in Science 7:05- 7:40 35 minutes Section 3Analyzing Pretest Data 10 minutesClosingReflection
38
Analyzing Pretest Data Take out data tracker with the results of the pretest arranged by item and by standard
39
Inquiry Process Where are we in the inquiry process?
40
Analyzing Student Data When looking at students data to inform instruction, it is important to look at more than 1 source. Ideally having 3 sources of data for each student allows you to find trends and gives a truer picture of student achievement and instructional effectiveness.
41
Reviewing the Steps For Analyzing Pretest Data Take out HO 4.15 Guide for developing a teaching plan for a unit to be taught between session 4 and 7 You have already reviewed HO 4.13a and HO 4.14a for homework (25 minutes) Now complete 4.13b and 4.14b, be sure to set a date for the posttest – Plan to bring posttest data to session 7 Take notes on analysis and planning on HO 4.16
42
Transition How will using this pretest data help to ensure your students are making measurable progress? How will using this process ensure that you meet your goals in closing the achievement gap?
43
