3 Reviewing Learning Targets and Readers Theater Rubric Review Learning Targets Display Readers Theater Rubric  Remember to identify individual roles and highlight each role in a different color

4 Readers Theater: Pam Munoz Ryan’s script for Esperanza Rising Place students into groups of 5 Distribute scripts to each group and 5 different colored markers  Prepare: Determine who will read each role. Highlight individual roles  Practice: Allow time to practice lines with group members, reminding students to refer to Readers Theater Rubric  Preform: Allow each group to perform their script, allow audience to provide feedback, based on rubric

5 Read Aloud: Selections from the Novel Esperanza Rising Readers Theater Still in groups, distribute student copies of the novel Esperanza Rising Display on the document camera the page Passages from the novel Esperanza Rising Have students read 2 to 3 of the recommended selections “Now you are going to read aloud passages from the novel Esperanza Rising. As you read aloud and listen to your group, think about how the novel sounds similar to and different from Readers Theater scripts you just performed.”

6 Discussion: Compare and Contrast the Script and the Novel Still in groups, discuss how the script of Esperanza Rising was the same and how it was different from the novel when read aloud Display I Notice/I Wonder anchor chart. Invite students to share with their group similarities and differences of the script to the novel and add them to the chart

7 Closing and Assessment Exit Ticket  On a note card write a response to the question: Which narrative format do you like better, a novel or a script, and why?  Homework: Tell someone at home about Readers Theater. How is it the same as reading a novel? How is it different? Which type of narrative do you like more? Why?
