Grinch Storyboard I have created a music for ‘Grinch’ movie. Firstly I have started by watching the clip and splitting it into a story board so I can decide when the music should change. After I watched the clip I have found a different samples of music that I can use in my clip.
2
Grinch Storyboard This is the first picture of my storyboard. In the actual clip Grinch is sliding down the rock. I have decided to use ‘Mickey Mousing’ here to demonstrate that Grinch is sliding down from the rock. I have played used instruments playing a descending scale covering an octave.
3
My back ground music starts here. I have choose cello to play a drone. I have used ‘Mickey Moussing’ here to show that slay is swinging around. For speech I have used Violins 1 as an instrument and have changed the ‘EQ’ here to make it sound different from normal human sound.
4
In this picture I have my back ground music playing, speech and ‘Mickey Moussing’’. I have used Mickey Moussing to represent Grinch’s foot steps.
5
This is the third picture of my storyboard. I have used ‘Micky Moussing’ here to show Grinch’s action. I have used bells as an instrument and played them as diegetic music. I have carried on with the speech to show that Grinch is still talking. After this part my back ground music comes in. I have used ‘Carol of the bells’ melody. I’ve arranged the melody.
6
In this part my sample comes in. Have chosen to use ‘Carol of the bells’ with singing In the actual scene, there all sing so I have highlighted parts that I would want to use in my piece and put them in to right place to show little people are singing the song. Have used ‘EQ’ here to make it sound like little monsters are singing. I have also modified the pitch.
7
I have carried on with my sample and also I have created a melody using delicate bells as an instrument the melody line rises as a star moves up.
8
In this picture Grinch is pulling his dog down and moving back to upwards. I have done ‘Mickey Moussing here to show Grinch’s actions. I have used piano playing up an octave and down when he pulled and pushed the dog and also I have used Xylophone as an an instrument to mimic Grinch’s eye blinks. For the non-diegetic music I have chosen to play 6 th Chords to give the felling that scene is changing. These are the pictures that shows where my second samples comes in. I have used my first sample as an diegetic music but I have decided to use my second sample as an non-diegetic music.
9
In this part Grinch has left the collar of the dog and the slay started to fall down from the mountain. I have used ‘Mickey Moussing’ here to show that slay is sliding down and also I have used Violins Instrument to mimic Grinch’s foot steps when he started to run up the mountain.
10
This is the last picture of my story board and last scene of my video clip. This is when Grinch has rescued the slay from falling down from the mountain. I have carried on using my second sample as an non-diegetic music. While my diegetic music carried on playing I have used Mickey moussing here to show Grinch’s and his dog actions and also I have used ‘EQ’ to change the sound.
11
After I have finished all the things, I have listed all the piece and make sure they all balance. For example when I used bells to demonstrate, they were too loud for other instruments. What I have done was I have changed the automation and I have fade out the bells sound when the picture started to disappear. When the Grinch was sliding down the rock I have used 4 different instruments to use Mickey Moussing. I wanted the sound like the sound are coming from different places. My singing part were to loud. I have again played with the automating to balance my piece.

What is PRS and how might it affect you? PRS for Music collects the license fee on behalf of song writers, composers and publishers. If I sold my music I would get paid. If I have any problems PRS will help me. So this is something like an Insurance. What is MCPS and how might it affect you? MCPS collects royalties by issuing licenses to music users in respect of the mechanical copyright in musical works. If your music is copyrighted and someone else used your music MCPS helps you to collect your money from who used your work. What are the rights of composers of samples you may have used? You need to check if the music is copyrighted and if it is then you have o get permission from the composer. This means you might need to contact more than one organization to get permission to use music depending on how you want to use it. The fee will depend on how much of the sample you intend to use (a quarter second is a minor use; five seconds, a major use). For example if the music you intend to sample (a Madonna chorus will cost more than an obscure drum beat). I have used the sentence from http://www.copynot.org/Pages/Music%20sampling.htm this website. http://www.copynot.org/Pages/Music%20sampling.htm What are your rights as a composer? My rights as a composer to give a live performance of music in copyright and get fees that are due on such performance are known as performing rights royalties. For me to be able to get paid I have to have a copyright. There are company's that can help me to get money such as PRS agency. They are responsible for distributing royalties to its member composers and copyright holders.

What is acceptable idiomatic use? To make sure your sample fits in with you scene and instruments. For example in my work I have watched the scene there were group of monsters singing. So I highlighted the singing part from my sample and use it for the scene where they sing and also I have played with the sound effect to make it sound like little monsters singing rather then using normal human voice. For an other example there were bells playing at the back so have used diegetic music there to demonstrate bells playing and for the bells I have use different sound of bells playing, such as for the small bell I used tiny sound and high note and for the big bell I have used the big sound and low notes. If it was a live performance I had to think about a more. What is ownership of the samples and how might these affect your work? There are some companies that makes samples of music where you have rights to use in your work without checking if they have copyright so they are the samples that you are allowed to use in your work without paying. How have you met the needs of the client with your music? We had 3 different piece of video where you have to create musical piece and and sound effects. For the Grinch we had to create musical piece by using samples and creating our own melody. What I have done was research for samples of music that will fit in with my scene. I have highlighted parts that I wanted to use in my piece and put them in to right place. After I started to crate my own melody. I have created my diegetic and non-diegetic music. I have used non- diegetic music in the scene where the star was moving upwards. I have used micky moussing and hit points to show Grinch's actions of movements.

For my second video clip. I was told to use and record sound effect crate sound for my video clip. What I have done was, I have researched the sound effects that will fit in with my video action and put them in to wright placed. And after I have recorded sound that I think It will work. For example I have created the conversation part and I made sure each one sound different from each other because they all different characters. For my last video clip I was told to to both. So I had to create my own musical piece, use sound effects and record my own sound effects. I have created my piece using 8 chords. My key was G major so I have used my chords according to my key. For the sound effects I have used some from YouTube and rest of them is the ones that I recorded.
