Mock Trial Hints for tryouts

Things we look for when you try out:  Answer the question right from the beginning. Hemming and hawing make you seem indecisive.  Make sure you choose ONLY one side when you give your answer, and give your initial response in one sentence.

Things we look for when you try out:  Once you have answered the question, tell us WHY you feel that way.  It is NOT enough just to say that you feel one way or another about a topic.

Other helpful hints:  You will be given a list of questions before tryouts.  PRACTICE ALL OF YOUR ANSWERS BEFORE YOU COME IN FOR YOUR TRYOUT.  Practicing with a mirror is especially helpful.

Other helpful hints:  MAKE EYE CONTACT with the coaches. This impresses us IMMENSELY.

Other helpful hints:  Notes are not a terrible thing, but they are discouraged.  If you bring notes in, DO NOT get lost in them. It means you aren’t making eye contact with the coaches.

Other helpful hints:  Don’t chew gum  Minimize distracting gestures and movements  Try not to sound scripted; this means you sound like a computer recording.  Instead, just be your fabulous self!

Other helpful hints:  BREATHE!!! We don’t want anyone passing out, and the more you slow down your breathing, the easier it is to get through the most nerve-wracking things in life.

Other helpful hints:  SMILE! A smile conveys confidence!

STRONG FINISH  Finish with a strong conclusion that reinforces your main idea.
