Mock Trial Hints for tryouts
2
Things we look for when you try out: Answer the question right from the beginning. Hemming and hawing make you seem indecisive. Make sure you choose ONLY one side when you give your answer, and give your initial response in one sentence.
3
Things we look for when you try out: Once you have answered the question, tell us WHY you feel that way. It is NOT enough just to say that you feel one way or another about a topic.
4
Other helpful hints: You will be given a list of questions before tryouts. PRACTICE ALL OF YOUR ANSWERS BEFORE YOU COME IN FOR YOUR TRYOUT. Practicing with a mirror is especially helpful.
5
Other helpful hints: MAKE EYE CONTACT with the coaches. This impresses us IMMENSELY.
6
Other helpful hints: Notes are not a terrible thing, but they are discouraged. If you bring notes in, DO NOT get lost in them. It means you aren’t making eye contact with the coaches.
7
Other helpful hints: Don’t chew gum Minimize distracting gestures and movements Try not to sound scripted; this means you sound like a computer recording. Instead, just be your fabulous self!
8
Other helpful hints: BREATHE!!! We don’t want anyone passing out, and the more you slow down your breathing, the easier it is to get through the most nerve-wracking things in life.
9
Other helpful hints: SMILE! A smile conveys confidence!
10
STRONG FINISH Finish with a strong conclusion that reinforces your main idea.
