Example 3.8 Paragraph 1. TS: Students can improve grades with a few easy steps. 2. SS: Taking notes during class is the first step. 3. EX: Writing down important information helps students listen more closely and provides good material for review. 4. SS: Another way to improve grades is to participate in class. 5. EX: Sharing ideas and answers during class discussion not only helps a student to stay alert during class, but leads to better understanding of material presented. 6. SS: Perhaps the most important step is to attend class regularly. 7. EX: Missing class often causes often causes students to miss key information or explanations that prevent them from knowing how to complete assignments. 8. CS: Using good study skills pays off in improved grades and in better understanding.

3.8 Paragraph: Personal Introduction
TS: Introduce yourself in your topic sentence. SS: Describe one important quality about yourself. EX: Explain why that characteristic about you is important to you and important for your teacher to know. SS: Describe a second important quality about yourself. SS: Describe a third important quality about yourself. CS: Conclude your paragraph with a summary sentence (or two) about how these qualities will effect your expectation in English this year.
