The King and I The Novel Was actually entitled Anna and the King of Siam Written in 1944 by Margaret Landon (1903-1993) Margaret Landon got the materials to write her novel from her husband, Dr. Kenneth Landon, who was employed by the Library of Congress, in the Library’s Division of Orientalia. She worked of the Pramoj manuscript which contained many of King Mongkut’s Correspondence. This same manuscript was used to write several more works, such as A King of Siam Speaks and Mongkut the King of Siam.

The King and I By Rodgers (music) and Hammerstein (Lyrics) Based on the Novel King of Siam by Margaret Landon. This musical is based in Bangkok, Siam in the year 1862. The musical is about Anna Leonowens, a British school teacher brought in by King Mongkut to help modernize his country by teaching his children and wives English and British Customs. The King and I ran for three years, the fourth longest Broadway musical of the time. Premiered on March 29 th, 1957 at the James Theatre on Broadway. The King and I won the Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Actress (For Lawrence), and Best Featured Actor (For Brynner)

Married Thomas Leon Owens Had two children, Thomas and Avis He Husband died, leaving her a widow Opened a school in Singapore and was eventually recruited by King Mongkut to teach his children and wives Sent her daughter to school in England and kept Thomas in Siam Was in England visiting her daughter when the king died, so she stayed there Was a Buddhist monk first half of his life Was versed in Latin, English, and astronomy Founded a new order of Buffhism and a temple in Bangkok Wanted to modernize Siam Brought in a British teacher to teach English and British culture to his wives and children Fell ill and died in 1968

Siam, Where is it? Siam is the previous name of Thailand. Siam, or Thailand, is located at the center of the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia.
