You may have heard this word? What does it mean? Austerity is all about MONEY! When the government does not have enough money to pay for things they have to... Save money Get more money

Imagine all the money that pays for things we need like hospitals, buses and benefits is in this box... Austerity is like a GAME! The aim of the game is to get as much money as you can in the box. To do this you can... Put more in (by putting up taxes) Keep more in the box (by making cuts)

The people in charge of the box are the Conservative Party They won the General Election in May 2015 and can do what they want with the money in the box They are in charge of the game of austerity Like all games there are... WINNERS and LOSERS Which will you be?

Tax is a way of getting more money in the box All the tax is counted up by the Chancellor of the Exchequer (George Osborne) and the government decides what to spend it on He gives some each to part of the country to run things like day centres and social services There are lots of different taxes and ways to get this money Can you name any?

VAT (Value Added Tax) Income Tax National Insurance Council Tax Car Tax Business Tax There are lots more! One way to get more money in the box is to put these taxes up! Do you pay any of these? Or should you and don’t!

The money in the box is used to pay for all types of important services and people that you might use or rely on. Can you name any? Schools and Teachers Police and Fire Service Hospitals and Nurses Roads and Buses Bin Collections Libraries Parks Social Workers and Carers Day Centres Soldiers Charities like People First Disability and Welfare Benefits

When there is not enough money in the box the government might cut some of these things or take them away What would you do?

All of these are important BUT...Are some more important than others? YOU DECIDE!

If you are losing the game or don’t want to play because it isn’t fair what can you do? Whinge! Shout and Swear! Call politicians names! Blame others! Do nothing and ignore it!

Find out the truth! Tell people about what you know! Boycott – Stop using companies you don’t like! Sign petitions! Join campaigns and groups! Help other people out! Join a political party! Go to meet your AM, MP and Councillors and see how they can help...even if they are conservative! Keep Voting!
