The Attitude of Service

“The smallest package I ever saw was a man wrapped up wholly in himself.” Billy Graham John 13:12-15 So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? 13 "You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. 14 "If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 "For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.

The Attitude of Service I. Humility is the required attitude of Sacrificial Service – V.3- [NOT] to think more highly of himself than he ought to think (huperphroneo)- Overestimate or “super-think” himself. “Egoholics” 1 Corinthians 4:6-7 Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos for your sakes, so that in us you may learn not to exceed what is written, so that no one of you will become arrogant in behalf of one against the other. 7 For who regards you as superior? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?
7
The Attitude of Service “Despite all the warnings our culture gives about the danger of low self-esteem, the real danger is self-centeredness and egocentricity.” Tim Keller
8
The Attitude of Service I. Humility is the required attitude of Sacrificial Service – V.3- But to think so as to have sound judgment (sophroneo)- to be sober-minded (soberly KJV) – 1. Boastfully (Self-Exaltation) – 2. False Humility (Self-Depreciation) – 3. False Claim (Self-Deception) – 4. Disregard (Self-Pity) – 5. Neglect (Self-Absorbed) – 6. Genuine Humility (Self-Sacrifice)
9
The Attitude of Service “It [spiritual gift(s)] is an expression of God’s grace, given to edify the body and therefore one should not overly evaluate himself and become arrogant, nor underevaluate himself and become useless.” Ken Hemphill
10
The Attitude of Service II. Grace is the means to sacrificial service V.3- Through the grace given to me (Charis)- to show kindness or undeserved favor 1. V.6- Gift (Charisma) Given (VAP) to be given something of value 1 Corinthians 15:9-10 For I am the least of the apostles, and not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me. V.6- according to the grace given to us

The Attitude of Service II. Christ is the measure of sacrificial service – V.3- As God has allotted to each a [measure of faith] (Metron)- a unit of measurement (Quantity) Allotted- Divide and distribute accordingly 1 Corinthians 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

The Attitude of Service II. Christ is the measure of sacrificial service – V.3- As God has allotted to each a [measure of faith] (Metron)- a unit of measurement (Quantity) – 1. A standard of measurement Philippians 2:5-7 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. John 13:15 "For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.

The Attitude of Service “Remember we did not declare temporary spiritual bankruptcy. Our bankruptcy is total and permanent. The only worthiness we have for entrance into God’s Kingdom is in Christ. The only worthiness we have with which to come before God is in Christ. And the only worthiness we have to qualify us for ministry is in Christ. If we are to progress in any aspect of the Christian life, we must look outside ourselves and only to Christ. It is in him that the grace of God is so abundantly poured out on us.” Jerry Bridges, Transforming Grace: Living Confidently in God’s Unfailing Love

All to Jesus, I surrender; All to Him I freely give; I will ever love and trust Him, In His presence daily live. All to Jesus I surrender; Humbly at His feet I bow, Worldly pleasures all forsaken; Take me, Jesus, take me now. All to Jesus, I surrender; Lord, I give myself to Thee; Fill me with Thy love and power; Let Thy blessing fall on me.
