Poetry Project You will be required to teach a poem to the class. You will select a poem from the Poetry Out Loud.org website – it must be approved by Mr. Abbott. You will be creating a PowerPoint presentation to inform the class about the poem and the poet. You are expected to memorize the poem and perform a “dramatic reading” for the class. You will be working on the project in class during the November tech days. Be prepared to create slides during your computer time each week; you may want to have “rough drafts” of your slides to help manage your time. Presentations will begin on November __________. Each presentation should last approximately 7 minutes.

Poetry Project Select the poem(s) you are interested in using for your presentation. Read the poem(s) and be sure YOU are prepared and able to teach the poem(s) to the class. Check with me to make sure your selection is available and your poem will be assigned to you. Do not select a poem based only on its length. Using all the skills and resources available to you analyze the poem’s meaning, purpose, the literary and poetic terms in the poem, and the poet’s use of words, phrases and language. Be prepared to answer a variety of questions about your poem from your classmates and teacher.
3
Guidelines Document and record the websites you use to create this PowerPoint. Be sure to create a text box to give credit for each visual you use. You will also need to show all websites and sources used to gather your information. Include biographical information about your poet. Include personal details as well details that affect the things the poet may write about. Use your Literature textbook and website to help you identify the important literary and poetic elements in the poem. You must be able to “teach” the poem to your class. Make sure you become an expert in your poem and poet so you are prepared for all questions (especially from Mr. Abbott). Print a copy of your poem to use in class over the next few weeks as you will have some time in class to work on this project. Remember your goal is to be prepared and comfortable enough to actually “teach” the class your poem.
