2. It’s Difficult, but We Must Deal with REALITY Not everyone will be invested in your success as a PM, especially if they do not know you. Many people are good team players and willing learners. They come prepared to work hard. Many are not, and will offer many excuses as to why they wouldn’t or couldn’t deliver.

Common Coercive Individual Behaviors on PM Teams – it’s About Control Using questioning, not to find useful answers, but as an aggressive tactic (helps them to avoid work and commitment to endeavor) Arguing with you in front of team Sarcasm Unconstructive criticism – insisting their perspective is best Eye-rolling, note passing, disengagement Nodding off during meetings Refusing to take notes on project teams – or drawing pictures instead Silent treatment One upmanship – or “the last PM I worked with was so much better, faster, fairer, than you…” or – “my LAST team was great and this one isn’t!”

Sadly, There’s More – Don’t Expect These, But Do Be Aware and Prepared Ask you for favors or sell a version of truth when you aren’t so sure you read a situation right the first time Don’t support the team at all Block the team Don’t care about the team or develop a relationship with anyone Don’t participate in the accountability system within the team

5. What Can PM’s Do? Document Learn strengths. Use the Strengths team grid, or have people self- report strengths. Ding them on their evaluations if you were given authority to do so. But do it fairly, and not outside the bounds of what you have informally or formally documented. Take care of your reputation as a PM. Treat others fairly and consistently, but do not allow yourself to be manipulated. Be courteous – but be firm on this. Don’t let your kindness be used against you.
