2
WHAT IS “SHARED PEN WRITING”? O Shared writing is the process in which you AND the child sit and write something together. O You write some of the message and the child writes other parts. O In the classroom, it works BEST as a small group activity, where students take turns sharing the pen to help you write a message, sentence, or even story.
3
SHARED PEN WRITING O SHARED PEN WRITING is also known as: O Interactive Writing O Shared Writing O These terms are often interchangeable when discussing this topic. Notice that all of these titles focus on the idea of collaboration.

BENEFITS O ASSUMPTION: Writing for young children means “handwriting.” Or they may envision writing as “writing down words” and practicing spelling. O THERE IS MORE TO IT: Young children need to practice writing as the act of composing, organizing thoughts into sentences and conveying new ideas.
6
TURN TO YOUR CLASSMATE O Why do you think teaching writing gets forgotten when it comes to schools? O Why could shared pen writing be beneficial and help writing become a bigger part of curriculum?
7
BENEFITS O IN A STUDY: In a small study at several urban schools, they found that using Interactive Writing for an average of 10.5 minutes a day led to improvements in children’s writing skills in multiple areas, including their ability to generate ideas, organize their words, make smart choices of words, spell words correctly and use proper capitalization, punctuation and handwriting.
8
HOW COULD I USE THIS IN MY CLASSROOM?
9
TURN TO YOUR CLASSMATE O Give one example of how you could use shared pen writing in your future classroom.
10
WORDS FROM A TEACHER O “With very young writers, using dictation is such a great tool to help them see how writing works! As our young writers progress in their understanding of how our language works, we still want to model writing for them in meaningful ways, but instead of doing all the work, we ask them to come alongside us and “share the pen”. Today, I’d like to focus on helping children write by writing WITH our kids…this has got to be my absolute favorite topic when writing with young children.”
11
A FINAL THOUGHT… O “Interactive writing is a not-expensive way to get a lot of high quality writing in a short time amount of time.”
