Draw a circle next to any passage which speaks to you Circle the number next to any that mean something special to you Reread the passages that you circled Mark through the circle if you think it might be your favorite Time to decide Choose your favorite passage and underline it

3 Basics Calligraphy (from Ancient Greek: κάλλος kallos "beauty" and γραφή graphẽ "writing") The Chinese name for calligraphy is Shufa It literally means "the method or law of writing"

5 First Calligraphy Calligraphy in China is as at least 3000 years old The oldest calligraphy found is carved into ox bones and turtle shells It became popular in China between 1200 and 500 b.c.e. It was a sign of intelligence and high society

6 Technique Hold the pen at an angle of between 30 and 60 degrees Lead your pen gently, do not lean on your hand or arm Lines need to be parallel Curves need to be even Take your Time!

7 The Task Imagine that you are a painter and scribe in ancient China. The first emperor of the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Gao Zu has asked you to write in your most beautiful calligraphy your favorite saying. Emperor Gao Zu will hang your calligraphy in his upcoming coronation ceromony.

8 The important stuff Take your time The pen is an extension of you Balance: weight, proportions and position are evenly distributed I am not looking for perfection, I am looking for your own artistic representation.
