SIMPLE PAST FORMATION Positive Form: Simple Past tense has two kind of verbs: regular and irregular verbs

Regular Past form A regular past form end in ed. It happened very quickly The van crashed into the car I posted the letter last week

_ed formation rules 1. If the verb ends in e, we just add d Hope = Hoped 2. When a verb ends in a consonant + Y, the Y changes to ied Copy = Copied 3. Sometimes we double a final consonant. This happens when a one-syllable verb ends with one vowel and one consonant (except: y, w, x) Beg = Begged

IRREGULAR FORMATION Some verbs have an irregular past form; it means that it changes in written and spoken way I had breakfast at six (to have) The train left on time (To leave) He was an amazing musician (To be)

Negative and Interrogative Forms To create a negative or an interrogative statement in simple past, it is necessary, most of the time, the usages of the auxiliary did

INTERROGATIVE STATEMENTS STRUCTURE 1.Aux Did/Subject/Verb/Complement/? Did you swim in the river last week? 2. Wh word/Aux did/Subject/Verb/Comple/? What did you do last summer?

I saw the whale in the sea last Friday I didn’t see the whale in the sea last Friday Did you see the whale in the sea last Friday? We do not use the verb past form in negative and interrogative statements I didn’t saw the whale in the sea last Friday Did you saw the whale in the sea last Friday?

Note: We do not use the auxiliar did in negative and interrogative formation when the sentence uses the verb to be (was, were) She was not a lawyer Wasn’t Were you at the hospital last Saturday? Where was you friend last night?
