What looks different?? 5x = 12 + 2x

Solve equations with variables on both sides

one side of the equation Some equations have variables on both sides. To solve these equations, you can first collect the variable terms on one side of the equation. Collecting the variable terms on the side with the greater variable coefficient will result in a positive coefficient. (MEANING: Move the smaller variable.) 5x = 12 + 2x

Solve this equation for x: 7x + 19 = -2x + 55 Solve this equation for x: 7x + 19 = -2x + 55

STEP ONE: Write the Original Equation 7x + 19 = -2x + 55 EXAMPLE ONE: Collect Variables on Left Side

STEP TWO: Add 2x to each side 7x + 19 = -2x + 55 +2x +2x EXAMPLE ONE: Collect Variables on Left Side

STEP THREE: Combine Like Terms 9x + 19 = 55 EXAMPLE ONE: Collect Variables on Left Side

STEP FOUR: Subtract 19 from each side 9x + 19 = 55 -19 -19 EXAMPLE ONE: Collect Variables on Left Side

STEP FIVE: Simplify both sides 9x = 36 EXAMPLE ONE: Collect Variables on Left Side

STEP SIX: Divide each side by 9 = EXAMPLE ONE: Collect Variables on Left Side 9x 9 36 9

STEP SEVEN: SIMPLIFY x = 4 EXAMPLE ONE: Collect Variables on Left Side

80 – 9x = 6x EXAMPLE TWO: Collect Variables on RIGHT Side

3x – 10 + 4x = 5x - 7 EXAMPLE THREE: Combine Like Terms First

1. 34 – 3x = 14x 2. 5x – 2 = x + 10 3. -6x + 4 = -8x 4. 2x + 4 = 3x + 8 5. 20 – 3x = 2x 6. 5x = -7x + 6 7. 14x – 6 = 17x 8. -x + 7 = -8x 9. 4x + 14 = 6x – 6 10. 6x + 3 = 8 + 7x + 2x
