1 Dietary Beliefs By Katherine, Stephanie, Leanne and Katie

2  A vegan diet is when people don’t eat any animal products. This includes Meat, milk, eggs and cheese ect.  Some extreme vegans don’t use or wear any items made from animals. They also do not use pillows which have animal feathers inside them. Vegan Diet

3  A vegetarian diet is when people do not eat meat, poultry or fish but will eat other animal products like milk, eggs and cheese.  They will not eat the flesh of any animal but they will, unlike vegans, eat animal products. Vegetarian Diet

4 This religion has various food restrictions, which are Halaal. Here are some rules:  Carnivorous animals are not permitted.  All pork and pork products are totally forbidden.  Sea animals which do not have fins or scales are considered undesirable by some Muslims.  Alcohol in any form is not permitted.  Permissible meat other than pork can be eaten only if it is prepared in the correct way (Halaal).  These products should be avoided by all Muslims, Lard, gelatine, Rennet, Whey, Vanilla extract.  Utensils should be separate for Muslims. There should be no contamination of Halaal and non Halaal. Muslim Diet

6  We were curious about where our food is sourced which we eat in the school canteen.  Our group made up a questionnaire which we emailed to the Highland Council to see if they could solve our problem.  We got a reply from Lileen Esler who's role is menu planning, nutrition etc.  She was very helpful and here is our results from the questionnaire. 7 1.Are you aware of different religious diets? (if yes, please specify)  Hinduism- vegetarian( no onions or garlic)  Christianity- No blood  Judaism & Islam- Kosher or Halal meat and fish only. No pig or blood. 2.Have you ever had to cater for religious pupils and did you understand why?  Yes we have various and we always investigate the specifics required. 3.Is there always a vegetarian option at lunch time?  Yes Always. 4.Is there always a vegan option at lunch time?  The Vegetarian option is no meat or fish. It may contain Dairy or eggs but if a pupil was vegan we would strive to accommodate. 5.Is any of the food organic, free range or vegetarian/vegan friendly? (if yes, please specify)  Our carrots are organic and so is our seasonal lettuce.  Our eggs are always free range.  Again we always have a vegetarian option  All our meat is Quality Meat Scotland.  All our fish is MSC Results

8 6. Is any of the meat suitable for Muslims to eat? (if yes, please specify)  We have Munro the Butcher who supplies us with Halal meat when requested. 7.Is there a chance that horse meat could’ve been in our school dinners?  No. We have The Bronze Award for Food For Life. To qualify all our produce is traceable. We are very proud to continue to keep this award and continue to aim for silver. This means we have complete knowledge of what goes into our school meals. 8.Where does our meat come from that we have in our school meals?  Our meat is supplied by Munros The Butchers in Dingwall. All our meat comes fresh from the Highlands. 9.What is your opinion on the schools attitude towards different dietary needs?  I think on a whole the attitude is good. We always strive to meet our pupils demands where possible whether it is dietary or religious reasons. 10.Do you think the school does enough to cater to these needs?  I believe we do.
