Library Lockdown Freshman Orientation Welcome!

You are about to discover the secrets of the library through several fun activities. Your journey is not a race but a chance to get to know the library and the people who work here. Before you start, get to know your team …. Discuss your best and worst visits to a library. What kinds of libraries were they? Did you find what you were looking for? Were the librarians helpful? Did you get a warm, fuzzy feeling or were you anxious and uncomfortable?

No need to fear the library! The library is a fun place to read, socialize, check your email, grab some coffee…and oh, yes, to do homework and research. After tonight, you’ll feel like a pro at using the library and its resources. Is this you? Click on the screen.

Print out and retrieve a handout to record your answers during the Lockdown. To do this: 1. Click on the printer below 2. Print the document that opens 3. Find the printer on the Self-guided Tour and pick up your handout 4. Click on the red X to close the document window and continue

Imagine you are illustrating a comic book. Draw a quick sketch of a librarian. Pass your drawing around and let each group member add to the drawing. List three words that describe your cartoon librarian. Write the names of your team members on your handout.

Here’s your chance to meet the librarians. Find and record the best locations for finding the answers to the questions on your handout by asking the librarians at the circulation desk, reference desk, information desk, presentation support desk, or course reserves desk. An answer of “I don’t know” means that you have asked at the wrong desk and should try another.

Use the online catalog to look up a book on the subject assigned to your team. Use information from the catalog record and the Self Guided Tour to locate a book in the General Collections about your subject. Find and record the fact about your subject posted near your book. When you are finished, come back and continue. Use information from the catalog record and the Self Guided Tour to locate the serial in print format. Find and record the fact about your serial posted near it on the shelf. Use your imagination. What do you think is housed on the 4 th and 9 th floors? Discuss as a group and record your answers on your handout. You are almost done. Turn in your handout and have your hand stamped at the reference desk. Find your balloon and……..

Using the Online Catalog Go to the library home page. Under “Find Information”, click on Books, Catalog, Videos

Click on Search by to choose the type of search you want. Enter your search term in the empty search box. Finding Books and Serials Example If your topic is “rain forest conservation”, choose subject and enter the words rain forest conservation.

There are 11 items in the library on rain forest conservation. This link would allow you to view the items.

The first item found is a book. It is available for check out and can be found in the General Collections. To find it, you must use the call number circled in red.

A call number is like an address: it tells exactly where the item is located. The online catalog shows the item’s call number to help you locate it. Finding Materials with Library of Congress Call Numbers Hmmm…According to this guide, QH541.5.R27 T47 1992 is found on the 7 th floor. Floor guides posted around the library and on the web site help you find the right collection and call number.

A serial is a periodical that is published at regular intervals, especially weekly or monthly. Examples are journals, magazines, and newspapers. A good way to search for a serial is to search by “Journal Title”.

Type your serial title and click on Search. Click on the title to view the record.

Serials are found using their call numbers in the same way that books are. In Atkins Library, serials in various formats are found on the second floor.
