JRN 302: Introduction to Graphics and Visual Communication - Demos - Color Tuesday, 2-23-16
2
Class Objectives Lecture SM Graphics Assignment demos Hue shifting, blends, masks, feathering, filters Color Homework assignment Social Media Graphics Assignment due next Tuesday (3-1-16) You will NOT have time to work on it this Thursday, but WILL have time to work on it the date it’s due If you turned in everything before then, you do not need to show up to this class
3
Collage examples Blurs, masks, hue shifts But do NOT use a pixelated image (meaning you stretched something) or blur something that shouldn’t be blurred/out of focus Work with lots of layers!!
4
Photoshop Demo: Blurs, Masks, Blends, Feathering You have to create a collage so you’ll use more than just your logo NOTE: Do the following while at 100% in Photoshop!! You may want to softly blend images into each other Blurs, smudge (on same layer) Feathering (on different layers) Masks + Gradient (on different layers)
5
Photoshop Demo: Hue and color shifts, filters NOTE: Do the following while at 100% in Photoshop!! You may want to adjust the hue/color saturation of each image (put on separate layers) In layers palette, click on the layer you want to change Click on the FX Select Color Overlay If you want to run a filter, you can do so on each layer
6
These collage skills can be used for photo illustrations in news stories Recent one http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/04/nyregion/hoffmans- heroin-points-to-surge-in-grim-trade.html?hp
7
Things you might use in this assignment = Filters Work best on a photograph Go through filter gallery However you get effect is fine Mistakes often produce awesome-looking effects Some good ones Brush Strokes: Crosshatch Sketch: Graphic Pen (be aware of foreground color) Texture: Grain (or do <Filter <Noise)
8
The Color Wheel Use it to make conscious decisions about choosing color for your projects. How to see Color Wheel (if you have your own computer) 1.In both ID and PS a.<Windows <Extensions <Adobe Color Themes.. click on the Create Tab 2.If you don’t, google “Kuler Adobe” 1.Remember to log-in
9
(Painter’s) Primary Colors The primary colors can not be created by mixing other colors together. They are : Red Yellow Blue OK Go and PBS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu44JRTIxSQ
10
Secondary Colors Halfway between the primaries are the secondary colors. The wheel divides the color spectrum into 12 hues.
11
Complements Uses colors that are directly opposite of each other on the wheel This produces contrast between warm and cool colors. Example in a house http://www.thisoldh ouse.com/toh/phot os/0,,20161202_20 370429,00.html
12
Analogous Colors (harmonious) Composed of colors next to each other on the color wheel. No matter the two or three you combine, they share an undertone and work well together.
13
Triads A set of 3 colors equidistant from each other create a triad of pleasing colors. The primary triad is red, yellow and blue. The secondary triad is green, orange and purple. Sp!!!
14
Shades and Tints The color is called hue. Tone refers to the particular quality of brightness or deepness of a color. Add black to hue creates a shade. Add white to hue creates a tint.
15
Warm and Cool Colors Warm colors Have red or yellow in them Advance on the page Cool colors Have blue in them Recede on the page
16
CMYK or RGB CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) is used for most full color commercially printed projects. RGB (red, green, blue) is used for all projects displayed on a screen or projected in some way.
17
RGB Color mixture in light Additive: all added together make white Screen dependent Used for web images (monitors), cell phone screens, laptop images… anything that is “back lit” 16.7 million colors Because of this wide range in colors, Photoshop lets you do everything while in this color mode Most commonly seen in filters
18
CMYK Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black(k) Color mixture in print Subtractive: all added together make black Due to impurities of ink, all added together really makes it muddy brown, so we add black ink
19
With that said… for your assignments You’re creating and keeping all images in RGB Why? B/C we’re not having anything commercially printed And our personal color printer in class has an internal software that automatically converts the RGB image files to CMYK inks it uses So if we (correctly saved it to RGB) and sent it, the file would go from CMYK -> RGB -> CMYK
20
Photoshop Sampling Color Say you want to select logo colors found in a photograph you have already taken Open photograph in Photoshop Select the eye dropper tool Click on the area in your photograph where color is ….Click on your foreground color (in tools pallet) Write down the RGB values ….Or begin using another tool immediately Note: if using your home computer, save the color to your color swatches
21
Sampling color Can upload a photograph to the site (color.adobe.com) and it will create a color scheme with downloadable swatches Under the Create page, click on the camera icon on the right top side of the site Upload your photo Screen capture your page (no longer able to download ase swatch) Why do this? Later on, you will be using photographs, and they have up to 16.7 million colors in them So for the design principle of repetition, sample colors from within the photos and use elsewhere (in shapes, text, etc.)
