2 The Atom Before Dalton Two previous theories were Aristotle’s four elements theory and Democritus’ atomic theory. Four elements theory was that all things on earth was made out of different compositions of either water, earth, fire, or air. Democritus’ theory was that matter was made of atoms of different shapes, masses, and arrangements: solid atoms are small and pointy, liquid atoms are large and round, and oil atoms are small and slippery.

3 Dalton’s Change Dalton’s theory mostly followed the ideas of Democritus with a few changes. Dalton devised that atoms were the building blocks of the universe, atoms of similar elements are exactly the same, no two elements have common atoms, and atoms can form together to create compounds.

4 Dalton’s Research Dalton was fascinated with meteorology and gases.
This fixation led to his study of pressures of gases. He discovered that gases were made of particles and have different pressures and masses. This discovery was the cause of his assertion that all matter is made up of particles.

5 Evidence Dalton’s Law of Partial Pressures shows a sum of pressure composed of gases with independent pressures. This shows that the particles of different elements have different masses.

6 How Dalton developed his atomic model.
Used the law of multiple proportions, elements combine in fixed ratios of small whole numbers. He was the first to incorporate atomic masses in his atomic models. All atoms are identical No two elements share any common atoms. Dalton believed this is what a helium atom looked like.

7 He was a teacher, a public lecturer, and he liked to study weather.
Interesting tidbits John Dalton identified the hereditary nature of red green color blindness. He was a teacher, a public lecturer, and he liked to study weather.
