2 Job Specialization Hierarchical Authority Formal Rules Compare this to a School or Business Model

3 Implement the Policies of the President and Congress Congress or the President creates a Law or Act Congress or the President then creates a Bureaucratic Agency to carry out that Act This in turn gives the Agency power to interpret and ‘make’ the policy.

4 Cabinet Created by the President Includes 15 Departments, each lead by a Secretary Secretary has both an advisory role to the president & a leader role to the bureaucracy Each Department varies in Size, Budget & Responsibilities

5 Independent Agency Created by the President, does not answer to Congress Created for a specific focus area Examples: CIA, NASA

6 Regulatory Created by Congress with an Economic focus Created to ‘regulate’ an area of the economy Examples are EPA and SEC Headed by a Commission appointed by the congress or the president They have both Legislative and Judicial powers

7 Corporation Functions similar to a private business Clients are charged for services Government supplements their budget to defray the client cost Examples: U. S. Post Office, FDIC

8 Commission Created to Advise the President Most are temporary Examples:
