Being or perceived as being overly-concerned with such change, often to the exclusion of other matters. What is your favourite newspaper cartoon? Why do you like it? Are you familiar with Doonesbury? The American cartoonist Gary Trudeau is well known for his biting political satires. The cartoon that you "read" touches on the psychological meaning that often underlies nursery rhymes and fairy tales.

3 the cartoon Consider how the visuals in a cartoon contribute to an understanding of the cartoon's theme and the author's purpose. How do the visuals differ from what you would expect in a book of Mother Goose rhymes? Why has Trudeau changed the visuals? How has he addressed the issue of political correctness?

4 to consider Has Trudeau's cartoon extended your awareness of the issue of political correctness? Consider whether you think political correctness can be carried too far, referring specifically to the final frame of Trudeau's cartoon How could children be raised to have a non-sexist view of the world.

5 the letter Write a letter to Gary Trudeau, either to complain about OR praise his handling of this political correctness issue. Be sure to provide reasons and examples to support your position. Your letter will be evaluated using the "Persuasive Writing in Context" rubric.

6 remember... ! Your letter must have at least three body paragraphs which are at least eight sentences long. Refer to the "NEXT" model in U3L1. Clearly outline your reasons as to why you either agree OR disagree with the message of Trudeau's cartoon. Provide details and statistics to support your point of view. Keep your audience in mind, which requires the use of a formal tone.
