1 Goals for Local Communications Within Sites Tony Hain / Fred Templin IPv6 Working Group – IETF 58 active site: - a site that may be intermittently-connected or disconnected from the global Internet, may frequently change provider points of attachment, may have multiple concurrent provider points of attachment, may temporarily or permanently merge with other sites, etc.

2 Goals for Local Communications Within Sites Scenario examples: Test networks Mobile Ad-hoc networks Nomadic nodes that meet and form temporary network Nodes that move together as a group Vehicular networks (air, ground, water) Etc. Asset protection in Enterprise Networks Home Networks Multi-homed sites

3 Goals for Local Communications Within Sites Goals: Easy to acquire - e.g., I’m in the desert and need to create an address Stable - support 24x7 applications like home security monitor Globally unique (or near-globally unique) – make collision probability small in case of: VPNs between enterprises Dynamic VPNs for temporary virtual organizations Mergers/acquisitions A bunch of mobile nodes get together in a bar Useful in absence of provider (local communications remain stable even if intermittently connected; reconnect to different provider (ship, aircraft…) Multiple addressing Prefix filtering
