:Young Citizen Inquiry Friday, 21/03/2014 One year research project focused on citizen inquiry (nquire.wordpress.com) Citizen inquiry = inquiry science learning + citizen science Engaging young people in doing scientific investigations Hands-on: ask, investigate and share real scientific questions Young people as practical scientists better understanding of the big issues of society, access science careers, develop a personal sense of wonder. Young people & Sheffield UTC Friday, 21/03/2014 Sheffield UTC is officially collaborating for the project Staff: proposed the design of a sensor-based mobile app for doing science Students: partners in designing, testing and sharing scientific investigations Evaluated the mobile app & proposed changes (e.g., simplicity, attractiveness) Proposed science investigations using the app (e.g., find the fastest lift, noise map) Designed a marketing campaign to promote the app and investigations What the research say_LKL3

How can Sense-it be used? Friday, 21/03/2014 Driving test: Am I a better driver than my parents, or my partner? Use the accelerometer and compass to measure how ‘smooth’ is your driving. Noise and stress: Is noise stressful? Log ambient noise for a day using the sound sensor and a scale from 1 to 5 to record when I feel stressed. Find the fastest lift: Where is the fastest lift in your area? Use the accelerometer and GPS to measure the speed of lifts (acceleration is converted into velocity with the use of algorithms on the nQuire-it Mission website) What the research say_LKL7
