To Be Binomial or NOT to be BINOMIAL? AP Statistics Mr. Towns Fenger High School
2
Instructions Write “B” on your paddle in BIG letters if you think that the distribution described is BINOMIAL Write “Not B” on your paddle in BIG letters if you think that the distribution described is NOT BINOMIAL BE PREPARED TO ANSWER ANY ADDITONAL ?’s ON THE SPOT!
3
Quality Control An auto manufacturer chooses one car from each hour’s production for a detailed quality inspection. One variable recorded is the count X of finish defects (i.e. dimples, ripples, etc.) in the car’s paint.
4
NOT BINOMIAL! - The number of trials is not fixed and the different types of defects have different probabilities.
5
Polling a Jury Pool The pool of potential jurors for a murder case contains 100 persons chosen at random from the adult residents of a large city. Each person in the pool is asked whether he or she opposes the death penalty. X is the number who say “Yes”.
6
BINOMIAL!
7
Random Digit Dialing When an opinion poll calls residential telephone numbers at random, only 20% of the calls reach a live person. You watch the random dialing machine make 15 calls. X is the number that reach a live person.
8
BINOMIAL
9
Logging In At peak period, 15% of attempted log-ins to an email service fail. Log-in attempts are independent and each has the same probability of failing. Tarik logs in repeatedly until he succeeds. X is the number of the log-in attempt that finally succeeds.
10
NOT BINOMIAL Why not?
11
Computer Instruction A student studies binomial distributions using computer-assisted instruction. After the lesson, the computer presents 10 problems. The student solves each problem and enters her answer. The computer gives additional instruction between problems if the answer is wrong. The count X is the number of problems that the student answers correctly.
12
NOT BINOMIAL Why is it not binomial?
13
I CAN’T RELAX! Opinion polls find that 14% of Americans “never have time to relax.” A statistician collected an SRS of 500 adults in order to prove this.
