Data Collection, Storage and Utilization MM Workshop Eurasia September 11, 2010 1

Agenda Paper v PDA data collection Laptops and Netbooks in Practice Ease of data access in Data Warehouse Examples of high value queries Questions 2

PDA v Paper surveys: Pros and Cons of PDAs and Paper Surveys

PDA v Paper surveys: The ‘pros’ of doing Paper Surveys Data captured will remain on the paper as captured for later reference. Hardcopy backup to reference if there are questions in the future. Greater ability to make special notes about a specific respondent  Main Pro: built-in safeguards

PDA v Paper surveys: The ‘cons’ of doing Paper Surveys Large surveys create unwieldy amounts of paper, filling backpacks and filing cabinets Data transfer from paper to electronic form takes much longer, requiring data to be entered twice in order to ensure accuracy  Main Con: Cumbersome, time- consuming data entry

PDA v Paper surveys: The ‘pros’ of using PDA’s: Much quicker in capturing the data (click or tap, rather than writing words into a pad of papers) Easier to transport and carry a single electronic device rather than a large stack of papers Data transfer from device to computer is nearly instantaneous.  Main Pro: EASIER

PDA v Paper surveys: The ‘cons’ of using PDA’s: Requires more training Easy to ‘slip’ when attempting to enter one number, entering another by mistake No hardcopy backup. If device fails before data is transferred to computer, it is just…gone  Main Idea: must be extremely careful when collecting data, and to get collected data into a preserved form

Use of Laptops and Netbooks Both Paper Surveys and PDA’s will require data transfer to a safe location. These Laptops or Netbooks will require necessary software (for PDA’s) or the proper electronic data entry form (for paper surveys)

Laptop Data Storage to Data Warehouse Once the data is cleaned on laptops or netbooks, the data will be transferred to FINCA HQ, where Research will normalise the data, and enter it into the FINCA Social Performance Data Warehouse.

FCAT Data Storage Pre-Data Warehouse The Research DW cuts reporting time by 50% and significantly reduces errors. 10

FCAT Data Storage Pre-Data Warehouse Once the data is cleaned and entered, The DW saves 5 or more days per report: 12 reports means 60 working days are saved. 11

Selecting Desired Variables 12

Saving and Accessing Queries 13 Users can pull nearly infinite number of indicators for analysis at global, regional or local level.

Query Appearance in Spreadsheet Users can be sure the data is clean and ready for analysis 14

2008 Client Retention by Country & Urban v Rural 15 Data as aggregated by pivot table

Exiting Clients by Country & Location 16

Eurasia Client Retention by DPCE 17

Client Literacy by PPP-Adjusted Dollars 18

Type of Agricultural Business, All Clients 19

Clients Employing One or More Persons by PPP-Adjusted Dollars 20

Helped Achieve Business Goals by PPP-Adjusted Dollars 21

Final Thoughts Potential for data integration… in the not-too-distant-future, FINCA hopes to integrate the Research Data Warehouse with its financial databases, meaning we can measure repayment rates against various social indicators such as education, gender, marital status, etc. 22

Questions/Discussion
