2 Welcome to Mr. Sarabia’s Grade 4/5 Class St. Leo’s Catholic School 2015-2016

3 What will the focus of the class be? We will be adhering to the Ontario curriculum for both grades and all subjects. Lets shape character!  effective communicator  creative and reflective thinker  self-directed and life long learner  collaborator  discerning believer of the Catholic faith  caring member of our community

5 Expectations Your child is expected to come to class prepared by having homework and assignments completed. They should have all the necessary materials for classes. Students should be doing approximately 40 – 50 minutes of homework each evening. In addition to at least 20 minutes of reading. Students should be reviewing concepts taught during classes. Students should show respect to staff and each other. Students should keep you informed as to what is going on in school (eg. agendas).

7 Assessment and Evaluation  Assessment of student achievement is a continuous and ongoing process.  Evaluations reflect the extent to which the student meets the expectations identified for each grade level in the Ontario curriculum for all subject levels.  Evaluation is based on the levels described in each subject area in the curriculum with Level 3 representing achievement that is considered to be the standard for the grade.

8 Assessment and Evaluation (continued)  Some methods of assessment and evaluation are: Daily work samples, test results, quizzes, assignments, projects, presentations, student portfolios and teacher observations.  Report cards will be sent home two times a year. The first will be in February and the second will be in June. There will be a progress report sent home in November.  It is important to come to parent-teacher-student conferences to discuss how to better meet the needs or improve on your child’s strengths and weaknesses.

9 Technology Usage Websites we encourage the students to use at home; Prodigy, IXL (math and language), Starfall (for reading support), Jumble books (Toronto Library’s read aloud books), National Geographic, any Trivia sight, any multiplication application, NOVA, BBC Kids. Encourage minimum use of screen time (TV, social media, entertainment apps, gaming)
