3 Introduction Internal migration is generally defined as the movement of people from one place to another within the same country. Internal migration can be broken down into people moving between provinces, districts, towns and villages. Statistics South Africa defined internal migration, as the change in a person’s usual municipality or municipality of residence during the 10 years period (2001-2011) preceding the collection of census data in 2001.

4 Background The results in this presentation are based on the 2011 census data. This presentation concentrates on movement to and within Gauteng district municipalities.

14 Conclusion Compared with other provinces, Gauteng had highest number of people arriving than leaving. Also the results from 2011 census indicates that the majority of the internal migrants in Gauteng are coming from Limpopo followed by KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. Conclude that the large numbers of the internal migrants were coming from districts that are closer to Gauteng district municipalities. However, Gauteng districts attracts few internal migrants from Northern Cape and Western Cape district municipalities.
