Chapter 1.4 McDougal Littell Middle School Math Course 1 Joseph Williams Melvin E. Sine Elementary Jwilliams@gesd40.org Objective: Use the order of operations.
3
Vocabulary Numerical Expression – pg. 21 - an expression, consisting of numbers and operations to be performed, that represents a particular value (a math problem with out an equal sign (=) Grouping Symbols – pg. 21 -symbols such as parentheses, brackets, or fraction bars that group parts of an expression.
4
Vocabulary Evaluate – pg. 21 - to find the value of an expression (find the answer of the problem). Order of Operations – pg. 21 - the order in which to perform operations when evaluating expressions with more than one operation.
5
Order of Operations 1.Evaluate expressions inside grouping symbols ( ) [ ] 2.Evaluate Powers 2 4 3.Multiply and Divide from left to right x and ÷ 4.Add or Subtract from left to right + and -
6
Using the Order of Operations = 14 – 1014 – 2 x 5 16 + 4 ÷ 2 - 6 16 + 2 - 6 = 18 - 6
7
Powers and Grouping Symbols 4 + 2 3 = 4 + 8 (3 +1) x 5= 4 x 5
8
Multi Step Problems Your class is going to the zoo. It costs $16 for each adult and $9 for each student. There are 3 adults and 22 students. What is the total cost of admission? (3 x 16)+ (22 x 9) Cost for adultsCost for students 48+ 198= $246 It would cost $246 for your class to go to the zoo.
