Valentino Cavalli Internet2 Fall Member Meeting, Chicago, IL, 4-12-2006 2 History The TERENA Connecting Schools initiative began in 2004 and brings together people from the NRENs involved in providing connectivity and/or services to schools to exchange information and learn from each other's experiences. One BOF was held at TNC 2005 in Poznan, Poland Two workshops on Connecting Schools via NRENs were held in 2005.

Valentino Cavalli Internet2 Fall Member Meeting, Chicago, IL, 4-12-2006 3 Main Issues “Political” issues: why should schools be connected via NRENs “Technical” issues: what are schools requirements and how to match the schools needs “Pedagogical” issues: important but not really addressed in our community yet

Valentino Cavalli Internet2 Fall Member Meeting, Chicago, IL, 4-12-2006 4 Outcome of London Workshop White Paper discussing pros and cons of connecting and serving schools by NRENs –Economy of scale –Synergy with research networks –Benefit of centrally managed policy and technical support VISIT “Videoconferencing in Schools Initiative – TERENA” –CFP issued last year by UK and Slovenian NRENs

Valentino Cavalli Internet2 Fall Member Meeting, Chicago, IL, 4-12-2006 5 Strategies and Surveys SERENATE 2002-2003 Case Studies: Denmark and Portugal eEurope 2005 required all public administrations (including hospitals and schools) to connect with broadband by 2005 Many primary and secondary schools connected via NRENs in Europe (TERENA Compendium of NRENs)

Valentino Cavalli Internet2 Fall Member Meeting, Chicago, IL, 4-12-2006 6 Schools Connected via NREN

Valentino Cavalli Internet2 Fall Member Meeting, Chicago, IL, 4-12-2006 7 EARNEST Survey How schools are connected What the network is used for Teaching vs Administration networks Security measures in place Email to teachers and/or pupils Who provides technical support

Valentino Cavalli Internet2 Fall Member Meeting, Chicago, IL, 4-12-2006 8 Future Technical Work Areas Provide documentation about NRENs who connect schools: which ones do so, the way in which schools are connected - directly, via other networks, technologies used, etc. Provide case studies and document best practice about the way NRENs connect schools, but also how to correctly set-up and/or manage the school LAN List the applications that schools need (for instance videoconference) and the minimum requirements in terms of bandwidth, QoS, and other network parameters to enable those applications Facilitate schools in finding/retrieving/accessing content Document best practice in whitelisting/blacklisting and filtering/blocking of sites

Valentino Cavalli Internet2 Fall Member Meeting, Chicago, IL, 4-12-2006 9 Summary History - Workshops Main issues: political, technical pedagogical Ongoing activities Studies and Surveys Future Technical Directions Resources (next slide)
