What is Discrimination? dis·crim·i·na·tion dis ˌ krim ə ˈ nāSH ə n/ - An act, instance, policy, etc. of unfavorable treatment based on prejudice, especially regarding race, age, or sex Basically, discrimination is treating someone unfairly because of who they are, what they look like, or what they’re into. Discrimination = Bullying

Discrimination in History Emancipation Proclamation Abraham Lincoln granted freedom to some black slaves in the USA. A person in power can eliminate discrimination! March on Washington Groups of people peacefully campaigned for no more segregation and civil rights. People can do something about it themelves! “I Have a Dream” Martin Luther King gave an amazing speech to try to get rights for black people and other people who were treated unfairly. The power of speech can inspire change! These are examples of events of discrimination in the USA.

Discrimination in History Residential Schools Aboriginal children were sent to boarding schools to try to make them part of European society, but they closed. People that were affected stood up for themselves! Voting Rights Aboriginals, Asians, Black people, women, and other groups tried to get voting rights for their groups for a long time before they did. Persistence pays off- hard work can make a big change! Person’s Case Women fought hard to be seen as people under the law, using mock parliament, speeches, and campaigns. Teamwork is useful! Lots can be done if we work together to stop it! These are examples of events of discrimination in Canada

It is important to know about the history of discrimination so we know what happened, what is still going on, and how it affects today! BE AWARE!

What Can We Do? CHECK YOURSELF -Learn about discrimination, just like we have today -Know your rights and the rights of others -Know what you believe in -Change your ways if you need to DON’T BULLY -Bullying is a type of discrimination! -Make sure not to bully others -Stand up for bullying around you -Don’t be involved in any kind of discrimination, even if it is humorous fun it can still hurt someone

What Can We Do? HELP OTHERS -Offer support to people that are struggling with discrimination -Help people in need, no matter who they are, where they come from, or what they look like. -Include everyone -Find the good in everyone TEACH CHILDREN THE RIGHT WAY -Teach children from an early age not to discriminate- they will be the next generation of powerful people! -Lead by example -If they learn when they are young, they will carry it with them for the rest of their lives!

What Can We Do? DON’T JUST THINK- DO! -Promote change -Inspire others -Write letters -Speak up against it -Do what you think is right -Make a change

Discrimination is NOT a laughing matter.. BUT WE HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE IT!
