23 To return to the chapter summary click Escape or close this document. Foldables Fold a vertical sheet of paper from left to right two times. Unfold.

24 To return to the chapter summary click Escape or close this document. Foldables Fold the paper in half from top to bottom two times.

25 To return to the chapter summary click Escape or close this document. Foldables Unfold and draw lines along the folds.

All matter is composed of tiny particles that are in constant motion. Particles in the liquid state have defined volumes and are free to move about within the liquid.

Thermal energy is the total energy of the particles in a sample of matter. Temperature is the average kinetic energy of the particles in a sample. An object loses thermal energy when it changes from a gas to a liquid, or when it changes from a liquid to a solid.

Why doesn’t this pressure crush you? The air doesn’t crush you because the pressure exerted outward by the fluids in your body balances the pressure exerted by the atmosphere. NY.PS 3.1a

34 To return to the chapter summary click Escape or close this document. 3 3 Chapter Review Answer Increased temperature causes the average kinetic energy of the particles in the gas to increase. Think of a balloon: as the kinetic energy of the particles inside the balloon increases, more particles will hit the walls of the balloon, causing it to expand.

What is the name for this process? A. condensation B. evaporation C. sublimation D. vaporization NY.PS 3.2a

37 To return to the chapter summary click Escape or close this document. 3 3 Chapter Review Answer The answer is C. If you have ever noticed the ice cubes in the freezer becoming smaller across time, it may be because the ice is sublimating.

38 To return to the chapter summary click Escape or close this document. 3 3 Chapter Review Question 5 If a cool object is left touching a hot object, what will happen? Answer The cool object will begin to grow warm. This transfer of thermal energy, going from a substance with higher temperature to a substance with lower temperature, is known as heat. NY.PS 4.1c

39 To return to the chapter summary click Escape or close this document. Question 1 In a solid, the particles are _______. A. moving in place B. moving away from each other C. not moving D. permanently still Standardized Test Practice NY.PS 3.1c

40 To return to the chapter summary click Escape or close this document. Standardized Test Practice Answer The answer is A. Even though you can’t see them moving, the particles that make up a solid have some motion.

41 To return to the chapter summary click Escape or close this document. Question 2 What state of matter is being illustrated here? A. gas B. liquid C. plasma D. solid Standardized Test Practice NY.PS 3.1c

42 To return to the chapter summary click Escape or close this document. Standardized Test Practice Answer The answer is B. The particles in a liquid stay close together, although they are free to move past each other.

43 To return to the chapter summary click Escape or close this document. Question 3 A gas has _______. A. definite shape but not definite volume B. definite volume but not definite shape C. neither definite shape nor definite volume D. neither shape nor mass Standardized Test Practice NY.PS 3.1d

44 To return to the chapter summary click Escape or close this document. Standardized Test Practice Answer The answer is C. The particles that make up a gas will move as far apart as possible in all directions.

As the stove heats up, the frozen dinner absorbs _______ and its temperature _______. A. cold, stays the same B. heat, falls C. thermal energy, rises D. ultrasound, fluctuates Standardized Test Practice NY.PS 4.1c

46 To return to the chapter summary click Escape or close this document. Standardized Test Practice Answer The answer is C. This passing of thermal energy from the stove to the frozen dinner is called heat.

47 To return to the chapter summary click Escape or close this document. Question 5 Evaporation is a _______ process. A. both heating and cooling B. cooling C. heating D. motionless Standardized Test Practice NY.PS 3.2a

48 To return to the chapter summary click Escape or close this document. Standardized Test Practice Answer The answer is B. The faster particles are those which are more likely to escape from the surface of a liquid, leaving behind the slower ones. That’s why a liquid cools as it evaporates.
