3 Dance As An Art  The dance will tell a story, set a mood, or express emotion  Ballet  Modern Dance  Ritualistic Dance  Tap

4 Dance As Recreation  This type of dance should be relaxing, fun, and for entertainment.  It can encourage companionship, courtship, and celebration.

5 Two Main Types of Dance  Theatrical dance is performed for the enjoyment of the spectator.  This dance is meant to entertain.  Ballet  Musical Comedy

6 Two Main Types of Dance  Social Dance is performed for the pleasure of the dancer.

7 Dance  The word dance is derived from an old High German word “danson,” which means to stretch out.

8 Why do people dance?  People dance for recreation –It is fun –It relieves stress –It encourages companionship.

9 Why do people dance?  Pioneer families used dances as socialization tools.

10 Why do people dance?  People use dance to communicate.  It has also been used in worship.

11 Why do people dance?  Dance creates a feeling of unity.  It can also help a culture to remember its past events.

12 Three Elements of Dance  Space  Time  Force

13 Space  The area of space occupied by the dancer’s body. The components include direction, size, pathway, level, and shape

14 Space  Direction deals with which way a dancer faces or moves.  Level is the vertical distance from the floor.  Pathway is the patterns made as a dancer moves through the air or on the floor.

15 Space  Shape is the form created by the body’s position in space.  Size is the magnitude of a body shape or movement. This can deal with large or small movements.

16 Time  Time is the relationship of one movement or part of a movement to another.  The components include accent, beat, duration, phrase, pulse, rhythm, syncopation, and tempo

17 Time  Accent is a movement or shape performed in such a way as to give emphasis.  The beat is the underlying rhythmic pulse.  Duration is the length of time a movement lasts.  Phrase is a sequence of related movements that has a sense of rhythmic completion.

18 Time  Pulse is the ongoing underlying beat.  Rhythm is a flow of sound or movement having regular accented beats. Patterned.  Syncopation is a temporary accenting of a normally weak beat in music to vary the rhythm.  Tempo is the speed with which a movement is performed.

19 Force  Force can also be called energy.  Force is a degree of muscular tension and use of energy while moving.

20 Force  Dynamics describes the way that a movement is done. (sharp, smooth, tension, or relaxation.)  Flow is the continuity of movement. Can be bound or free flowing.  Weight is the strength or lightness of movement.

21 Technique  Technique is the degree of skill or command of fundamentals exhibited in any performance.  Technique can also be the amount of effort put into any performance.

22 Locomotor Movement  Movements that travel through space  Walk  Run  Hop  Jump  Leap  Skip  Gallop  Slide

23 Nonlocomotor Movement  Movements that stay in one place  Bend  Stretch  Push & Pull  Rise & Sink  Shake  Swing & Sway  Twist & Turn
