2 Physical Fitness Physical Fitness is the ability of your body systems to work together efficiently to allow you to be healthy and effectively perform activities of daily living. A fit person has energy left over after performing their daily responsibilities.

3 Health vs. Wellness Health is more than just the absence of disease. Health also focuses on prevention of illness. Wellness is a state of being that enables you to reach your full potential. It includes intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual aspects.

4 Physical Activity Physical activity is a general term referring to any body movement which includes sports, dance, and daily activities (walking, yard work, etc.)

5 Exercise Exercise is done purposely to build fitness

6 Fitness, Health, and Wellness Benefits Cycle of Physical Activity Benefits Being Physically Active leads to: 1. good fitness 2. improved health & wellness

7 Look Good and Feel Good Regular physical activity will help you look your best! Doing regular physical activity will also help you feel better. Your body can resist fatigue and is less likely to be injured.

8 The Parts of Physical Fitness 1. Health-Related Physical Fitness helps you stay healthy and determines if you are fit. 2. Skill-Related Physical Fitness helps you perform well in sports.

9 Health Related Fitness Cardiovascular Fitness is the ability to exercise your entire body for long periods of time without stopping. It requires a strong heart, lungs, and blood vessels.

10 Muscular Fitness 1. Strength-how much your muscles can produce 2. Endurance-the ability to use your muscles many times without tiring

11 Body Fatness Body fatness is the per- centage of body weight that is made up of fat compared to muscle, bone, and other tissues Too little or too much can cause health problems

12 Flexibility Flexibility is the ability to move your joints through a wide range of motion

13 Hypokinetic Conditions Hypokinetic conditions are health problems caused partly by lack of activity 1. heart disease 2. high blood pressure 3. diabetes 4. osteoporosis 5. obesity

14 Skill Related Physical Fitness Fitness in these areas help people excel in sports (people who are “athletic”) 1. agility 2. balance 3. coordination 4. power 5. reaction time 6. speed
