Feb. 25, 2016 Jack and Jill What are some differences between men and women? What are your expectations in a relationship?

Pair up with someone of the opposite sex and discuss your answers

Our Gender Whether you are male or female, it makes a difference in how we are in the world, how we are treated, how we are trained.

Gender Identity and Kids https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=- VqsbvG40Wwhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=- VqsbvG40Ww

Today we are going to focus on the lives of men https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tneKw arw1Ykhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tneKw arw1Yk Beauty is becoming more important than ever around the world

Act like a man!!! Use your diagram What are you learning when you hear that?

Message to men When you get hurt take it in, don’t ever tell anyone, keep it in, hang tough, go it alone. If you feel one way and are told to act another how will go grow up?

What names do you get called when you go outside the box?

What is the purpose of these names? What do you do if someone calls you by these names?

They are slaps in the face Get back in your box There is verbal and physical abuse

Physical mistreatment 1 out of 6 boys sexually abused before 18 How will boys be able to talk about this if they are supposed to remain “in the box?” When you get hurt don’t tell anyone, keep it in. Take the pain, keep it to yourself, show anger and nothing else What will happen when he is a teen and he gets angry?

Homophobia and Herosexism Many of the words we use against boys and against girls have to do with being gay. Sissy, fag, wimp --- These are fighting words for boys. Even the slightest hint that we are gay means we must change our behavior to prove we are in the box. A real man Would you let your boy play with dolls?

Boys are not born violent They get physically and emotionally punched to pressure them to stay in control

Violence in the Media https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NfMZ mnNqHshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NfMZ mnNqHs Violence in the Media

 Males face a comparable amount of pressure to females when it comes to body image in the media.  Focus less on weight and more on masculinity  Males face pressures to be LARGER and more MUSCULAR without becoming fatter (Bereska, 2004).  The average male model has shed 12 lbs of fat and gained 25 lbs of muscle in the past 25 yrs. http://www.snac.ucla.edu/pages/Body_Image/Body_Image.htm http://i.models.com/model_culture/50topmalemodel s/images/oliver.jpg

 The presence of THIN male models has been on the rise.  A wide range of body sizes are more acceptable for males compared to females.  HOWEVER, there are social consequences for being overweight for both males and females. (Bereska, 2004). http://www.youtube.com /watch?v=zIFAoRU1veo http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x169/100malemodels/calv inkleinman-garrettneff.jpg

 In Journals: Do men handle situations different than women?

 If you could tell the men in this room something they should know about women, what would it be?  What do you expect in a relationship?  Should men treat women like a lady or an equal?  What do women want?

What Women Want https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PMdz JHl__khttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PMdz JHl__k

 In this segment women in the room will participate and men will listen, without comments, laughter or other response.  What is the one thing that men or boys say to you---something that hurts you or that you don’t like ---that you never want to hear again.

 What are some things you have learned about how you are supposed to act growing up if you are a good girl?  What does society tell you do to act like a lady?  In the box make a list  What names do you get called if you are outside the box or act a different way?

 Overly provactive-whore  Too smart-bitch  Too athletic-dyke

 Women are often led to believe that they will be safe because men will protect them. This is a lie. Girls and women can be raped or beaten regardless of whether they are in the box or not, just by virtue of being female.  One of three girls is sexually assaulted or abused by the time they are 18 usually by an adult male. One out of tree teenage women in a dating relationship in high school gets physically or sexually abused

 Exploitation mistreatment and abuse of women by men  How is it enforced? Male leadership, lack of safety, unequal funding (ie sports) sexual harassment, keeping women in traditional jobs sexual assault physical violence  Internalization: Violence against peers Fights between young women, competition, gossip, supporting a man’s abusive behavior  Self destruction: Self blame, hopelessness drug use, suicide, eating disorders, high risk sexual activity, prostitution, gangs, obsessive attention to appearance

 Every man can be an ally to women and women should be allies with each other

Jean Kilbourne’s Research “Advertising creates a mythical, mostly white world in which people are rarely ugly, overweight, poor, struggling or disabled, either physically or mentally” “Scientific studies and the most casual viewing yield the same conclusion: women are shown almost exclusively as housewives or sex objects” “Many women internalize these stereotypes and learn their limitations, thus establishing a self-fulfilling prophecy”

The Impact of Media on Body Image People all over the world use the media every day. Whether it's using a computer, watching TV, reading a newspaper, or listening to the radio, media is a way to communicate. However, media also plays a big role on body image and how teenagers perceive themselves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufHrVyVg wRg

There is now a $33 billion diet industry that was non-existent 20 years ago In the last 25 years there has been a 60% increase in females shown purely as decorative/sex objects. Statistics

Statistics Continued.. The body type portrayed in advertising as the ideal is naturally possessed by only 5% of females in the United States. In a recent survey by Teen People magazine, 27% of the girls felt that the media pressures them to have a perfect body. 69% of girls in one study said that magazine models influence their idea of a perfect body shape.
