Haikus are… Haiku is a poetic form and type of poetry from the Japanese culture. Combines form/structure, content, and language. Meaningful, yet short and to the point.

Snapshot moment Haikus are meant to capture moments of life like a photograph, but in poetic form! Haiku poems take you inside a moment to reveal an insight or truth. All done in 5-7-5 5 syllables 7 syllables 5 syllables

Paint a picture… Unlock meaning by reading words and phrases carefully See, hear, smell, taste, or even touch each single element of the original moment. These images help you connect to the author’s of the haikus and make connections of your own.

Haikus will often contain a seasonal word or symbol (kigo) Presents a moment of discovery or enlightenment (satori)

Quickwrite Haikus are all about a special moment. Think about a special moment in your life (birthday, graduation, a fun day with friends, etc.) Journal: Write about what you might hear, see, taste, smell, or touch on that day. Try to find images that reveal the way you might feel at that particular moment on that special day

Practice! Now, using the special experience you wrote about, create your own Haiku! Remember, 575 Be as simple and to the point as you can.
