2. Improving a Child’s Experience of Hospital Treatment Teddy Bear Clinic

3. Who am I? Qualified as Registered General Nurse in 1982 Since than worked in a variety of different Healthcare Settings Employed in Powys since 1997, initially as a staff Nurse in Llandrindod Wells, and since 2005 in Brecon Minor Injuries Gained Emergency Practitioner Qualification in 2006 and Independent Prescriber in 2009

4. Facts: In 2010, 2951 children under the age of 17 were seen in Minor Injury units in Powys with either minor injuries or illness 50% of these were under the age of 11

5. When children have to attend hospital, they have to deal with 4 major stress factors. - The injury or illness itself - Associated pain, discomfort and anxiety - Strange environment, equipment and people - anxious parents

6. Benefits Reduce fear and anxiety in young children attending hospital, by familiarizing them with the environment, staff and equipment To use the visit as an opportunity for Health promotion and Accident Prevention Promotion of Hospital Services within Powys

7. Project Management Initially: Discussion with manager and colleagues about the project and its aims and objectives Establishing the level of interest within local primary schools Engaging other departments of the hospital in the project

Conclusion: -The feedback received from the school was very good- it was perceived as a valuable educational experience for the children -Hospital staff involved in the event also enjoyed the occasion and the interaction with the children -Further Teddy Bear Clinics have taken place on 15 th and 22 nd of November with equal success
