3  Complainant: the person making an allegation of discrimination  Prima facie: a case whose first impression is legally convincing  Gravamen: the most serious part of an accusation

4  Respondent: the person or organization that the complainant alleges committed discrimination  Mediation: intervention between conflicting parties that promotes compromise or settlement of the dispute  This occurs in about 70% of complaints with 75% of those ending with a settlement  Conciliation: bringing conflicting parties to a resolution of their differences

6 Remedies  Ordered to stop the practice  Issue an apology (written)  Pay compensation for mental anguish, or losses suffered  Give the job back or give the promotion  Order the organization to adopt programs to relieve the hardship  Require organization to put education programs or training about discrimination into effect
