2. 4-2 Unit Rates and Proportional Reasoning A rate is a ratio that compares two quantities measured in different units. Example: There are 15 grams of fat in 5 servings of canned soup. 15 grams of fat 5 servings

3. The rate for one unit of a given quantity is the unit rate. Ex: 15 grams of fat 5 servings To find a unit rate, divide the first quantity by the second quantity. 15 ÷ 5 = 3 grams of fat per serving

4. Example (I do) A package of cheddar cheese contains 15 servings and has a total of 147 grams of fat. Find the unit rate of grams of fat per serving. 147 grams 15 servings 147 grams ÷ 15 servings = 9.8 A package of cheddar cheese 9.8 grams of fat per serving

5. Example (we do) Find the unit rate for 210 heartbeats in 3 minutes 210 heartbeats 3 minutes 210 heartbeats ÷ 3 minutes = 70 The unit rate is 70 beats per minute

6. A unit rate that gives the cost per unit is a unit cost. To find a unit cost of an item, divide the total cost of an item by the number of units in the item.

7. Example (I do) Two sizes of shampoo bottles are shown. Which size is the better buy? $6.19 16 fl. oz $6.19$3.99 16 oz. 13.5 oz. $3.99 13.5 fl. oz ≈ $.30/fl oz. ≈ $.39/fl oz. Since $.30 < $.39. the 13.5 fl oz bottle is the better buy.
