Kingdom PROTISTA Protozoans Algae
2
General Characteristics All are either unicellular or colonial. None produce true tissues. Contain approximately 125,000 different organisms. Divided into two major groups: protozoans & algae (not part of the classification system)
3
Protozoans microscopic, unicellular, motile organisms most are aquatic; many are found in the soil large number are parasitic most obtain food from other sources, some can make their own food
4
Algae every natural water supply contains some type of algae most are microscopic unicellular or colonial organisms (some reach 100 feet) they may appear to be floating mats of green slime or velvety coatings on submerged rocks most make their own food - by photosynthesis
5
Protozoans are divided into two phyla based on their means of locomotion Phylum Ciliophora - ciliates Phylum Sarcomastigophora – amebas, sarcodines, & flagellates
