Date and Place of Birth/The Early Years Jaques Cartier was born in St. Malo France in 1491 Historians know little about his family Most likely intrigued by stories from sailors Encouraged by Giovanni Verrazano to explore Visited Cape Bonavista along the Coast of Newfoundland Discovered L’ Isle des Oiseaux (Isle of birds – now known as Funk Island) Died Sept. 1557 at age 66

Contributions/Achievements Jaques led first European expedition to St. Lawrence area of Canada. King of France sent Jaques to North America to find a passage to China beginning of July 1541. Later in July of 1541 he landed at Moscow point changed the name Chaleur Bay (Warm Bay). Cartier and his men encountered another group of Indians whom historians believed were Stadaconas. He proved that Newfoundland was an island Cartier made three voyages to the St. Lawrence region among all records by the first documents exploration in North America

Miscellaneous Facts and Interesting Information Stadacona and Huron Indians became hostiles Cartier searched for gold and spices The only treasures he found were pyrite and quartz. Cartier saw unusual fish on his voyages He claimed Gaspe Peninsula in Canada for France.
