Sampling Technique: Muncie Capture-recapture By Soumaly P. Bounket Ben Freed Tom Lockhart

Objectives Students will : communicate their strategies through discussions. estimate sizes of populations by using proportion. implement sampling Technique: Capture- recapture. realize the value and accuracy of sampling.

Context: How does this fit with other things students know? Students know: the difference between a population and a sample. simple random sampling. proportions.

Materials Each group (3 students) One brown bag of goldfish One paper plate One 2 ounce-cup One bowl for color fish For every group One large box of color fish

Mechanics Groups of three Assign Roles within the group Distribute materials Sampling by capture-recapture Record data Estimate population size

Summary Students have estimated the size of a large population by applying the concepts of proportion through capture- recapture statistical procedure. Students have recognized the usefulness of sampling.
