Coffee…Café Learn how coffee is made…
2
Coffee comes from plants…and they start out really small.
3
…and the plants begin to grow. Look at how they are growing!
4
…and they keep growing. It takes about 5 years.
5
And when the coffee beans are almost ready to grow…blossoms come out…but only stay for a day.
6
…then coffee cherries come out. First green…and then yellow…and then red when they’re ripe.
7
Usually the coffee cherries are picked by hand when they are red…by people in warm countries…like Colombia, Guatemala, Brazil, Vietnam…and many others.
8
From the fields the coffee must be brought in and weighed. That’s how the workers are paid. The bags can weigh even 100 pounds.
9
You pour the coffee cherries into a huge bin full of water and they stay there for 1 day.
10
Then a machine separates the outside red part from the two coffee beans inside.
11
Then the coffee beans must sit for two days…and ferment.
12
Then the coffee is ready to be rinsed…
13
…and dried.
14
…the sunshine makes it dry.
15
Then the coffee beans must be dried more in a huge oven.
16
To put them in the oven the workers have to climb up to the top and put them in this huge funnel. It’s a hard job.
17
The last step is for the coffee to be roasted. The roaster gives it the dark brown color and the beautiful smell.
18
So remember…coffee doesn’t come first from a can. It comes from beautiful countries. This picture is of Guatemala. They grow lots of coffee there.
