Types of Roman Columns Doric Columns (top) –Oldest, simples, classical style –Plain, saucer-shaped capitals and base –Considered to hold more weight –1 st level of arches used in the Colosseum

Types of Roman Columns Ionic Column (middle) –More graceful and ornamental –Shaft is fluted and more slender –Capital formed with two spiral scrolls –2 nd level of the arches of the Colosseum
