2.  Jacques Cartier was born in the year 1491 in Saint Malo, France.  When he was younger, he was an experienced sailor.  He died in Saint Malo, in the year 1557  He was almost 70 when he did die

4.  Jacques Cartier sailed to find a route to Asia.  The king of France told him that he should claim any unknown lands for France

5.  He started his voyage in May of 1534  He returned to France in September 1534  He traveled for 4 months

7.  Cartier claimed any unknown land for France  He provided new information for maps  He also established a settlement in Canada

8.  Canada got its name from kanata, which is what tribes in the area said. Cartier thought the tribes were talking about a great country  Kanata means home in the local tribes language  Cartier misheard and named the new country Canada
