Latinos Fight for Change 1966: Chavez leaves CSO to help farm workers in Central CA, teams up with Dolores Huerta to form a union called United Farm Workers Farm owners refused to recognize UFW, tell workers “huelga” is illegal, bring in undocumented workers Chavez begins to use non-violent methods like marches, sit-ins and a grape boycott, farm owners use police to harass UFW Despite political resistance from Pres Nixon and CA Gov Ronald Reagan, boycotts worked and UFW is recognized Cesar Chavez was a member of Los Angeles CSO, travelled through CA encouraging Mex-Ams to vote & supported worker’s rights

1968: David Sanchez forms Brown Berets Berets organized East LA walkouts when student walk out of classes demanding smaller classes, more Chicano teachers & administrators 1970: National Chicano Moratorium, a peaceful march to protest Vietnam War became violent with rioting & looting LA Times journalist Rueben Salazar killed by LA County Sheriffs during the protest – symbolized unfair treatment of Latinos by police Brown Power Movement Congress enacts bilingual program (language & culture), many young Mexicans start Chicano Pride movement

Latinos Begin to Gain Power 2. National Politics: MAPA: helps get 8 Latinos elected to the House of Reps, 1 Senator 3. Local Politics: La Raza Unida: helps candidates run for city councils, mayors, school boards 1. Legal: LULAC & MALDEF file lawsuits agnst Latino discrimination Due to new immigration laws, America became more diverse. UFW and Brown Power caused Latinos to seek more power in America:

Native Americans Seek Equality 1968: American Indian Movement (AIM): formed to fight for civil rights & protection from police brutality AIM involved in violent confrontations w/ FBI & Police at Alcatraz, CA & Wounded Knee, SD Results: 1.1972: Indian Education Act, tribes gain more control over local edu 2.1975: Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act, gives tribes more say so over how to run their reservations & free college
