1 Beach Week May 28 th -30 th 2013 Steffanie Gardner Triangle Classroom Summer 2013 The children played in sand in different ways throughout the week. Here Berenger (13 mnths) is feeling the sand move through his hands at the indoor table while Matthieu ( 27 mnths) is playing at the outdoor table with sand toys and a windmill where he is learning how the wind moves the sand. The other children also explored wet/dry sand, and how sand moves P.1.10 Participate in a variety of gross/fine P.5.3 Uses fingers of two hands to complete activities. P.5.5 Use objects as tools. For the gross motor for the week the children walked in the sand box through an obstacle course, found objects around the playground with different textures in pails, and dug in a large mound of sand together and looked for buried treasure at the bottom. Here Matthieu (27 mnths) and Adriana ( 23 mnths) dug with shovels through a mound and dug underground to find bugs from the classroom. Also pictured is Sam (32 mnths) who is going through the obstacle section where they climbed underneath of the tire. P.2.9 Identify and use a variety of spatial relationships with objects (e.g., the child will move self and/or an object over, under, beside, and through as directed). P.1.9 Enjoy movement activities. P.2.10 Apply movement concepts to specific movement situations (e.g., bend knees to soften the landing). P.3.7 Explore the environment (e.g., banging, shaking, throwing, dropping, climbing). FA.1.83 Sort objects by texture, size, or color. P.4.6 Use objects as tools. P.5.1 Grasps small objects. For science and math the children throughout the week had a scale on the science table to weigh wet sand versus dry sand and outside they had a pulley system in the sand pit where they could add sand. Here Adriana (23 mnths) was putting sand in the buckets of the pulley and then pulling them back and forth. Also pictured is Matthieu (27 mnths) who is weighing the wet/dry bottles on the scale and learning which one weighs more. M.5.12 Pour substances into containers. P.3.14 Manipulate objects by throwing, catching large balls with two hands, striking, swinging, and pulling at a basic level. (e.g., throws an object at a target with an overhand motion and trunk rotation, throws something upward and catches it, and jumps over a stationary object). For art the children painted on white construction paper with brown paint using rollers. Then they added to previous work by painting with yellow paint with sand mixed into it using their hands. Lastly, they painted with orange paint with brushes and then sprinkled sand on top. Here Sam (32 mnths) is sprinkling sand on top of his painting by shaking the bottle with holes on it upside down with up and down movements. P.5.2 Isolates one or two fingers. P.1.10 Participate in a variety of gross/fine motor and sensory activities. P.5.1 Grasps small objects. P.5.3 Uses fingers of two hands to complete activities. FA.1.50 Delight in touch and feel of materials rather than what is being produced. M.5.20 Communicate feelings of hot and cold. M.5.6 Pour substances out of containers. P.5.5 Use objects as tools. For dramatic play the children played with and dressed up in beach day attire. They dressed up in bathing suits, life jackets, sandals, hula skirts, and sun hats. They played with objects like Beach balls, towels, sunglasses, and the Pool. Here Sam (32 mnths) is dressed up in a hula skirt and beach hat as he sits on the sand. ELA.4.6 React to new situations based on the memory of a previous event. FA.1.33 Pretend through role play. FA.1.18 Express self through dramatic play.
