3 The Code of Bushido and Samurai Values  Bushido, “The Way of the Warrior”  The Code of Bushido governed a samurai’s life. It called on samurai to be honest, fair, and fearless in the face of death. Samurai were expected to value loyalty and personal honor even more than their lives.  A samurai’s supreme duty was to be loyal to his lord that he would gladly die for him*  The price for failing to live up to the code of Bushido was seppuku, or ritual suicide*  Seppuku became an elaborate ceremony*

4 So You Want to be a Samurai?  Get in groups of two or three  Choose a Daimyo and a Samurai  Daimyo approach the Emperor and ask for the first test  Your Samurai will need to pass four tests : --Armor, Accuracy, Concentration, and Poetry Writing

5 Dress your Samurai  Correct armor  Samurai name, Daimyo’s name, and reason for fighting  You have 3 minutes.  10 possible points

6 Accuracy  Design a slingshot with the materials provided  Ready, Aim, Shoot. You get 3 tries to hit the target.  2 min Training. Then contest.  You will receive points based on how close you hit to the target.

7 Concentration  Your Samurai will face off against the other Samurai.  1 vs. 1 in a Staring Contest  First person to smile or laugh loses.  Winner gets 10 points for their Daimyo.

8 Poetry Writing  Your Samurai will now compose a Haiku poem about their Daimyo.  Possible: 10 points

9 Haiku  5 syllables for the first line,  7 for the second, and  5 for the third.

11 Train your Samurai  Shoot accurately (create a bow/arrow or slingshot mechanism)  Self Control  Sixth sense about danger  Write a haiku/poetry  Have a tea ceremony  Loyalty to your Lord

13 22.8 Training in Spiritual Strength  Most samurai were Buddhists  Two forms of Buddhism that became popular in Japan were Amida and Zen  Samurai were drawn to both kinds of Buddhism, but especially Zen Amida Buddhism*Zen Buddhism* Founded in the 12 th century by a monk named Honen Appealed to many samurai because of its emphasis on effort and discipline Believed that all people could reach paradise by relying on the mercy of Amida Buddha Stressed self-reliance and achieving enlightenment through meditation Zen Buddhists meditated for hours, sitting erect and cross-legged without moving

15 Tea Ceremony Rules  7 Rules of Chado  1. Make satisfying bowl of tea 2. Lay the charcoal so that the water boils efficiently 3. Provide a sense of warmth in the winter and coolness in the summer 4. Arrange the flowers as though they are in the field 5. Be ready ahead of time 6. Be prepared in case it should rain 7. Act with at most consideration toward guests
