Key terms Atlantic Triangular Trade The best-known triangular trading system is the transatlantic slave trade, that operated from the late 16th to early 19th centuries, carrying slaves, cash crops, and manufactured goods between West Africa, Caribbean or American colonies and the European colonial powers, with the northern colonies of British North America, especially New England, sometimes taking over the role of Europe. bondage The state of being enslaved or the practice of slavery. cash crop Any crop that is grown for sale rather than for personal food or for feeding to livestock Chesapeake region The colonial regions comprised of Virginia and Maryland. First Atlantic System The Atlantic slave trade or trans-atlantic slave trade took place across the Atlantic ocean from the 16th through to the 19th centuries. free state A state in 18th and 19th century United States in which slavery is prohibited. Joshua John Ward The largest American slaveholder, dubbed "the king of the rice planters". Rice Kingdom An epithet for South Carolina, so named for its principle cash crop harvested by slaves in the early eighteenth century. Second Atlantic System The Second Atlantic system was the trade of enslaved Africans by mostly British, Portuguese, French and Dutch traders. The main destinations of this phase were the Caribbean colonies and Brazil, as European nations built up economically slave-dependent colonies in the New World. Slave States A state in 18th and 19th century United States in which slavery is legal. slave trade The Atlantic or trans-Atlantic slave trade took place across the Atlantic ocean from the sixteenth through to the nineteenth centuries. The vast majority of slaves transported to the New World were Africans from the central and western parts of the continent, sold by Africans to European slave traders who then transported them to the colonies in North and South America. The Middle Passage The Middle Passage was the stage of the triangular trade in which millions of people from Africa were shipped to the New World, as part of the Atlantic slave trade. Depiction of the Middle Passage Commercial goods from Europe were shipped to Africa for sale and traded for enslaved Africans. Africans were in turn brought to the regions depicted in blue, in what became known as the Middle Passage.
