GDI 2015 THE NEGATIVE

 The counter to the Affirmative  Negates the course of action proposed  So much variety! Many ways to negate  What makes someone a negative debater?  Uncertainty  On the fly  Dashing dreams  1nc, 2nc, 1nr, 2nr  Presumption THE WHAT

 Why do you want to be negative?  Dictate a lot of the focus of the debate / Choose  The negative block  Buffet  Neg leaning judges  Presumption!  WHY NOT?  AFF speaks first and last  Ugh dat 2AR  2NR is the hardest speech  Theory THE WHY

 Have multiple ways to win in the 2NR  Have generics  How do you like to debate?  Prepare everything, map out everything – block/2nr/cx  Don’t put something in the block that can’t be in the 2NR  Status quo / Case turn  Disad  Topicality  Counterplan  Kritik THE HOW

 Worse than right now  Disadvantages / Case Turns / Impact turns  This is hard because 8 minutes of the 1AC disagree  Must outweigh the affirmative  Weak against one part of the case? Does the DA turn the case? STATUS QUO

 Another policy option  Solve for the case  Avoid a disadvantage  Complex with theory risks – simplify it  2NR can still have case arguments, but prioritize efficiently COUNTERPLAN

 Knock-Out  Super strategic for the block  Time-trade-off  Keeps affirmatives honest  Can set up counterplan competition or disadvantage links  Risky 2NR choice – coin-flip! TOPICALITY

 Philosophical objection  Complex  Diversity – many options and avenues of attack  Can be less centered on government/the State  Framing issues  Case debate still matters KRITIK

 What kind of team are you? What are your strengths and weaknesses?  Breadth or Depth?  Include analytics on case – incorporate CX  Diversity helps  Avoid contradictions – (the dreaded double-turn) 1NC STRATEGY

 The negative is a fun(nel)  Rock and a hard place – too much/too little – the porridge block  Divide up the block  Base this off the 2AC!  Are we stuck with anything? 2NC / BLOCK STRATEGY

 Choose / narrow / funnel - have to predict the 2AR  Have an overview – one sentence why you win  Hardest speech in debate – get some help from your partner!  Must have offense, and put it first  Still need some defense  Depth / close doors  Going for T  All of the 2NR  Going for a disadvantage  Don’t lose to case outweighs  Going for a Counterplan / Kritik  Don’t lose to the permutation 2NR STRATEGY

 Ask questions  Take notes  Save speech documents  Save 2NC core prep documents  Save 1NCs  Tweak them  Write blocks! POST-ROUND STRATEGY

 Figure out what kind of 2N you want to be – be the 2Aiest 2N you can be SUMMER STRATEGY
